You might be thinking, “How does he accomplish all this being deaf?!” Let’s find out…
GIVE A QUICK SUMMARY OF WHERE YOU COME FROM AND EARLY CHILDHOOD.
I grew up on a dairy farm in Lynden, Washington and was born deaf. My mom developed a rare virus while carrying me, which resulted in the hearing loss. We think God’s hand was in this. He wanted me to be deaf for his own special reasons. I loved hockey and got into wakeboarding later.
WHERE DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL?
Just a small, farm town high school in Lynden Washington. After that, I moved on to the school of life!
WHAT STRUGGLES AND FEARS DID YOU HAVE TO OVERCOME AS A CHILD?
Sometimes it was hard. People are scared to communicate with a deaf child. I felt shy to approach someone in public. I felt there was no way I could communicate and didn’t really talk very much like I do now. Even though I interact with tons of people on a daily basis, I still consider myself shy. My parents helped me overcome shyness. They raised me the same as they raised their other two hearing kids. I went to regular schools and played on regular sports teams. My love of hockey taught me teamsmanship and how to interact well. I also played baseball as a kid.
IS THERE ANY PARTICULAR STORY YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD?
When I was young, I decided to go down to the river to chill out. I was about a half a mile away and didn’t tell anyone I was going. What ended up happening was the whole neighborhood got involved in a search for me. They found me at the river sitting on a rock. It’s hard raising a deaf child, because you can’t just yell out, you have to have eye contact.
WHERE DOES YOUR GREAT ATTITUDE COME FROM?
I guess my parents? They would lecture me when I had a bad attitude. They would tell me to act right and be positive! Again, they raised me as a normal kid and I didn’t get any special favors just because I was deaf.
WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING DEAF?
Quiet with no noisy distractions.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF BEING DEAF?
Sleep!!! It feels like you are in a quiet world that can’t bother you with annoying background noise. If someone is yelling at you, just turn your head around 🙂
HOW DID YOU GET INTO FILM AND YOUTUBE?
I loved photography when I was younger. I started filming and gaining popularity with my DIY scooter tutorials. Once GoPro came out, I started filming like crazy. Then one thing led to another…Youtube is a fun place to share the videos with everyone.
His Jacob’s Well video has over 1 million views. WATCH IN HD.
WHAT ARE SOME BIG OBSTACLES YOU’VE HAD TO OVERCOME?
I get many ugly comments everyday about me being deaf and how I talk. I know I can’t talk perfect, but I am comfortable about how I talk in front of the camera. If people don’t like it, it doesn’t matter… not everyone is the same. Don’t worry about what people think… if you are happy about yourself, then stay that way and don’t let people change you.
WHAT SHOULD WE KNOW ABOUT YOU THAT WILL INSPIRE OTHERS?
Being deaf doesn’t stop me from achieving what I want. I don’t think negative like, “Oh, I can’t do that”… I take it as a challenge, which is really fun sometimes.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND DREAMS?
I want to hit one million YouTube subscribers and keep posting videos that help people with their GoPro cameras! I would really like to own a scooter shop and a scooter race track. I want to race so bad. Maybe one day I’ll live in Hawaii when I’m older and retired.
WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE TO THE WORLD? WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO LEARN FROM YOU?
Hey everyone! If you want something really bad, don’t give up, keep getting to it! That always works for me 🙂
